Support

We had a lovely meeting today despite the cold and talked about the ways support from friends, family, our community and culture affect our parenting.

There were some amazing stories of help received when we were finding our feet as mothers, and some things that we didn't find so supportive.

We talked about ways to ask for help: how making our needs clear and asking or showing other people how they can help us, and accepting help when it is offered, can make mothering feel more joyful.

There are many support networks available to us - partners, family, friends, breastfeeding or children's groups, community and the internet - and we talked about making connections stronger and perhaps forging partnerships together with others ('god' or 'allo' parents) to give ourselves the ongoing support that makes the practicalities of mothering a little easier.

For practical help it is worth remembering groups such as doulas and HomeStart.

Forums can be a way of feeling connected with a wider world of mothers, even if you feel out of step with your neighbours. La Leche League International has some wonderful forums with threads on subjects such as feeding a premature baby, increasing your milk supply, starting solids and allergies http://forums.llli.org/index.php  We also have the La Leche League Bristol Facebook page. In Bristol we also have the Natural Parenting yahoo group, which can form a connection to other like-minded parents across the city.

Some interesting books that talk about this are 'Parenting for a Peaceful World' by Robin Grille, 'Primal Health' by Michel Odent and 'What Mothers Do, Especially When It Looks Like Nothing' by Naomi Stadlen- all available from our Group Library.

Membership of La Leche League connects you with similar mothers around the world, and means that you receive the regular magazine Breastfeeding Matters which is full of mothers experiences and up-to-date info. Here is the latest edition http://www.lllgbbooks.co.uk/product/501/Breastfeeding-Matters-January-February-2012/default.aspx

Happy building up networks!
